Feature Request - Cache Map Data

Post by thomthom »

I know you can turn on Pro mode to save some bandwidth, but I'd really like to see some cache feature that let you cache the map data for a region. That way you can download and cache the map while you are on a WLAN. It's not like the map itself changes, so it only need to be downloaded once.

I think this is a great idea. But I'm not sure how technically feasible it is to implement. Turf uses Google Maps and I don't think Google allows caching the map data.

Paldepind is right, Google doesn't allow caching of their satellite maps. Best option is to get a better data plan, or caching the normal Google maps and marking the zones in there..

The Google Maps have different sets of APIs - which one are you using?

Hmmm... yes... I know you can create your own map on Google Maps, can you use then on your Android? Google Earth file?

Checked out the Maps app and this seem to be a reasonable solution. I was able to cache Trondheim. Now I just need to create a map with the different zones - and this can be made publicly availible, can't it? So other turfers can use it?

Candidate for a small tutorial? Or is there one already?

Ah! Lovely! I just tried it out - even zone polygons can be marked and displayed in the Android Google Maps app! :D Sweet! Will be making a map tonight!

Seems like this feature is something that people want. Thirdpart solutions is outside of Turf, but i think that many users are interested in this. Please feel free to create a how to tutorial. :-)

I do some work setting up the Trøndelag area - then I'll see about sorting out a thread with tutorial and links to maps. Looks like you can make maps into collaboration projects - so for large areas people can divide the work.
